2nd SIM-Cloud Availability Zone Launched. Benefits and New Features

With the launch of the new availability zone of the public SIM-Cloud, the fault tolerance of client infrastructure can be increased by a factor of 2. This update opens up a number of possibilities for businesses; let us look into them in more detail.

What is an availability zone?

Availability Zone Infographic Availability zones are independent segments of one cloud infrastructure based on separate data centers. Each zone uses its own:

  • computing resources;
  • data storage systems;
  • security measures;
  • power supply systems;
  • network connections;
  • cooling systems.

This feature is an additional guarantee that your infrastructure will run with no interruptions. Events in one segment have no effect on the services in the other part of the cloud. For example, if the servers in the 1st zone lose the power supply due to a fire, a flood or other unforeseen circumstances, the servers in the 2nd zone will not be affected.

Our availability zones, avz1 and avz2, are located in German Tier III+ data centers, TelemaxX IPC-3 and IPC-4. These data centers were designed for corporate clients with high demands towards reliability and fault tolerance. In addition to the reserve systems in the data centers, independent zones multiply the fault tolerance of services in the cloud.

Users control availability zones using a single interface – SIM-Cloud Dashboard or API. The central control panel can be used to create and configure cloud instances in the chosen zone, organize reserve copying through BaaS, as well as activate additional services of the OpenStack platform.

What can the 2nd availability zone be used for?

Using independent zones is a good way to additionally improve the infrastructure’s availability. This lowers the risk of lost income due to downtime, which is especially important if the cost of such interruptions is too high for a business.

This feature also helps solve other tasks that require an isolated computing platform. Using different availability zones, a user can:
